Purebred pup or mutt -- it's your choice

Which should you choose, a purebred puppy, or a mutt?

Often the choice comes down to the size of your wallet. Purebreds cost more than mixed breeds.

Purebred dogs have other great attributes too:

  • You know what you're getting as far as temperament, size and behaviour are concerned;
  • Reputable breeds will usually offer you a guarantee that the pup's parents are not carrying hereditary physical or mental defects which may emerge in the pups.

With a mutt, you never quite know what you're getting, but this certainly doesn't mean that your mutt won't be lovable.

I'm a great believer that dogs will find you; that is, that the dog that you're meant to have will be given to you, or that you'll pass a pet shop and won't be able to resist a little cutie.

The rise of designer dogs

"Designer" dogs are dogs created by the deliberate matings of purebred dogs of different breeds.

The National Geographic states that:

The most popular breed of designer dog is the Labradoodle—originally a cross between a Labrador retriever and a poodle. The mix reputedly combines the intelligence, aloof nature, the delicate frame, and the low-allergy, and non-shedding traits of the poodle with the boisterous exuberance, lovability, and loyalty of a lab.
