Want to photograph your dog? Here are some tips which will help

1. Shoot your photos outside in the early morning, or in late afternoon

If possible, choose a cloudy day, and take the shots outside. The cloudy day diffuses the light, and cuts down on harsh shadows.

The best shots are taken while your pet is doing something else. This means spending lots of time with the dog, just waiting, and then being ready with your camera at just the right moment.

2. Choose a plain background

A light-coloured dog looks great against green foliage. If you're taking a shot that you want to use in advertising, use a backdrop.

3. Have a squeaky toy handy

Your dog will get bored fast, if he's young. Have plenty of distractions to get his attention and make him look alert.

4. Get down to your dog's level

Aim to be looking directly at your dog. Yes, this means lying down on the lawn, or on the carpet.

If you're using a 35mm camera, choose a 90mm lens for body shots, and a 75mm lens for head shots.

5. Have PATIENCE

Use plenty of film, or take plenty of shots if digital.

5. Get helpers, if possible

It's useful to have a couple of helpers, who can play with the dog, while you concentrate on your camera.
