Your dog may be too fat, and you may not even know it - or be prepared to acknowledge it.

Weight loss for dogs: Why most dog owners fail — and how you can succeed reports: “According to the Journal of Veterinary Internal Medicine, between 60 and 70 percent of the owners of fat dogs don’t think their dogs are fat. It’s impossible to treat a problem that you don’t know exists. And it’s not just a problem of lack of awareness. Many veterinarians tell me that no matter what they say to their clients, the owners insist the pet is not fat.”

Read the article; it may be a wake-up call. A slimmer dog is usually a healthier dog, after all.

Exercise will help. Here are some options:

• Fetch is a great game for any dog. Teach him how.
• Long walks around the park or the neighborhood.
• Go swimming with your dog.
• Job with him.
• Push the stroller with your dog.
• Play chase.
