Rawhide dog treats - yummy munchies for your dog
Thursday, July 5th, 2007    Subscribe To Our FeedIf you feel guilty when you give your dog a biscuit treat, then rawhide dog treats are for him. Not only do they clean his teeth, but they can keep him happily occupied for hours: try them if your dog barks when you go out.
However, you do need to know your dog, and know what you’re feeding him so that the chews don’t make him ill.
Rawhide dog treats are usually made of the hide of cows, horses, and other animals.
Since these chews are often made in other countries they may contain lead, arsenic, insecticides, and antibiotics that could be unhealthy for your dog. This means that you should buy them from a pet food supplier who either labels the rawhide chews, or who guarantees the source.
Rawhide is very palatable to dogs, but some veterinarians have been seeing more acute constipation in dogs because the rawhide is not digestible and larger pieces can get caught in the intestine. If the dog would only use the rawhide dog treats as a pacifier, and not eat it like food, this wouldn’t be a problem. Before you offer your dog a rawhide dog treat, talk to your veterinarian, and see what they recommend. And if your dog is very greedy, don’t give rawhide at all.
Remember to do a bit of homework on rawhide dog treats and do ask your vets what they think. All dogs are different, and what will suit one dog won’t suit another.
